The Dream? Drive By Shooting at MLK Parade in downtown Little Rock.

Browse > Home / Americas / The Dream? Drive By Shooting at MLK Parade in downtown Little Rock.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) ? Police are investigating the shooting of a young girl after the MLK marade in downtown Little Rock.

Police say a group of girls got into a fight at the MLK parade in downtown Little Rock. The girls moved their argument to an alley at Wolfe and Battery near 18th Street.

The girls tell police then a silver car and a pickup truck pulled into one end of the alley. The girls say someone in one of the vehicles started firing at people at the other end of the alley and the girls say they were caught in the crossfire because they were in the middle.

The girls say the shooting didn?t have to do with them. Lt. Terry Hastings with LRPD says this story varies from what police were told earlier.

The victim is an 18-year-old girl and police say she is stable.

Erick Silva DQ puts need for instant replay front and center

Erick Silva rode a roller coaster of emotions at UFC 142. After taking out Carlo Prater in 29 seconds, Silva celebrated with the loud, Brazilian crowd. He was brought down to reality when he was informed by referee Mario Yamasaki that the blows Silva used to knock out Prater were deemed illegal. Though a replay showed that the blows hit the sides of Prater's head, not the restricted area on the the back of the head, Silva had been disqualified.

The UFC confirmed that Silva did receive his win bonus and it's unlikely that this loss will stunt his career's trajectory, but it didn't need to be a loss. Yamasaki admitted when talking to UFC commentator Joe Rogan that he had to make the decision in the moment.

"I have to decide right there and then. There's nothing I can do," Yamasaki said.

In that moment, there was nothing Yamasaki could do. Instant replay does not have a place in MMA. Though he watched the replay on a giant screen just moments after the fight ended, the bout was decided.

With the technology already in place for referees to use instant replay, there is no good reason for MMA not to use it. Instant replay is used in other major sports. Though it isn't always perfect, it gives referees confidence on making calls.

Like in other sports, strict parameters of when it should be used would need to be put in place. For example, it does not make sense to use instant replay to decide if a fighter was truly knocked out or not because of the difficulties in restarting a stopped bout. But in the case of a disqualification, instant replay can and should be used.

China cancer village tests law against pollution (Reuters)

XIAOXIN, China (Reuters) ? Nothing in Wu Wenyong's rural childhood hinted he would end up on a hospital bed aged 15, battling two kinds of cancer.

Born to poor farmers in Xiaoxin, a dusty village of low brick houses in southwestern Yunnan province, he paddled in the Nanpan River as a child and later helped his parents tend rice.

About 3 km (two miles) from Wu's home stands a three-storey high hill of chromium slag produced from the Yunnan Luliang Peace Technology Company. The runoff from chromium-6, listed as a carcinogen by the World Health Organisation, seeped into the Nanpan, turning its waters yellow.

And the toxic water and earth that Wu's family blames for his condition have become a battleground over how far China will bend to letting courts punish pollution.

The chromium hill is a rallying point for a coalition of environmental advocacy groups, who have filed a public interest lawsuit for residents of Xiaoxin and nearby Xinglong in a special environment court.

Last September, Wu's face ballooned and tumor-like growths developed on his neck. He was diagnosed with thymoma, cancer of the thymus gland in the chest, and with leukemia.

"The pollution is quite terrible. I've heard stories of cattle dying," Wu said, from his hospital bed in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan. "I've seen the water in the river and it's all yellow. I've never drunk the water."

Beset by growing public alarm and protests about pollution, China's leaders have reached for a remedy they have otherwise shown little appetite for: letting the courts decide. Those courts come under the control of the ruling Communist Party, but environmental campaigners spot a welcome, if narrow opening.

In a country where non-governmental organizations have long been treated with suspicion by authorities, collective litigation by organizations with no government backing is breaking new ground in the environment courts. The groups want the privately owned company to establish a 10 million yuan ($1.6 million) compensation fund for an environmental clean-up.

"This is a significant case," said Qin Tianbao, a professor of environmental law at Wuhan University, uninvolved in the case. "In the past, lawsuits were only launched by agencies with semi-official backing. If it is possible that an organization with absolutely no government backing can bring about a public interest litigation, then it certainly is a good thing."

The Yunnan Luliang Peace Technology Co. was established in 2003, according to its website. It makes chromium, a metal used in stainless steel, paints, plastic and dyes, and sodium dichromate, used for the tanning of leather.

Both are highly carcinogenic metals.

The company declined Reuters' request for an interview.

Polluting factories have been relocated from urban areas to the countryside, home to half of China's population. Local officials rely on these industries to generate tax revenues.

"Why was the factory built here and not Beijing and Shanghai? Because in Beijing and Shanghai, there are people watching," said Chang Shichen, 47, a villager from Xinglong.

The lawsuit had been due to go to trial in the city of Qujing last November, but was delayed until February to give advocates more time to assess the ecological damage, said Li Bo, director of Friends of Nature, one of the groups involved.

Environmental groups dispute local authorities' assertion that the water is now safe.

"There is no problem with the village's water now, although I'm not sure about the specific circumstances," Ji Honghua, an official with the Qujing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, said by telephone.

In the two villages, which are surrounded by an industrial park, residents drink either bottled water or water supplied from a small river and later filtered.

The local government gave Wenyong's father, Wu Shuliang, 1,000 yuan after he told officials about his son's plight. He borrowed 50,000 yuan for his son's chemotherapy -- and family members say there is no health insurance to reclaim the money.

"All I want is for the government to give us an answer about the pollution," said Wenyong, a tear rolling down his cheek.

His hair has fallen out from chemotherapy and he weighs 32 kg (70 pounds), almost 10 kg lighter than before his illness.

Wenyong's doctor, a woman surnamed Li, said her patient in any case needs two to three years of follow-up treatment.

Last year, the environmentalist Li learned from a media report that 5,000 tonnes of chromium-6 had been dumped outside a district of Qujing. He investigated and found 140,000 tonnes had been buried in the nearby villages of Xiaoxin and Xinglong.

"Many villagers didn't know what chromium is, they thought it was soil, so they'll dig up the chromium to pave roads. "Others will use it to build the foundation of their homes," he said. "They work barefooted in the fields. Some of their feet would start to rot and they would never understand why."

HIGH EXPOSURE

The chromium-6 levels in the water were 200 times above the permissible limits, Ma Tianjie of Greenpeace in China said after

an independent investigation was conducted.

Enforcement of laws regulating the disposal of chromium is poor. Greenpeace's Ma estimates there are 1 million tonnes of chromium-6 dumped across China that still has not been disposed of, based on environment ministry data.

Virtually every resident of the villages knew of someone who contracted cancer after the industrial park was set up about seven years ago. No epidemiological studies have been conducted.

Studies have shown that exposure to chromium-6 causes leukemia and cancer of the stomach, liver and breast.

"It is one of the worst chemicals to get in drinking water,"

Max Costa, chairman of the department of environmental medicine at New York University, said in emailed comments.

Wu's family needs no convincing about what is to blame.

"Our plot of farmland was just next to the chromium slag," said the elder Wu. "They even dug a drain next to our land for the runoff."

In September, the local government arrested five people for the dumping and ordered the company to halt production of chromium and sodium dichromate.

The hill is now covered by metal slabs. Guards monitor the company around the clock to ensure production has stopped and detoxification will be completed in August, Ji from the Qujing environmental bureau said.

Li recruited lawyers, academics and other NGOs to look into the feasibility of filing a lawsuit and the team named the Qujing Environmental Protection bureau as a co-plaintiff,

Two weeks after their case was accepted by the Qujing court, the central government's Civil Law Draft Amendment Office sought Li's views on amendments to draft legislation.

An official told him the government was considering letting "social organizations" bring lawsuits about pollution and food safety.

Although "social organizations" have not been defined, new laws could lead to more "public interest" litigation and allow ordinary people to join forces to defend their interests.

Li said he was "cautiously optimistic" about prospects for victory in the Qujing case -- which he said he had raised in his discussions with the government.

"If this has already happened, that an environmental organization with a status like ours could successfully file a public interest lawsuit, not including us in future interpretations of the amendments to the civil law, will be something that is unjustified," he told the official.

But without an independent judiciary, the environment courts will continue to avoid handling sensitive cases, said Zhang Jingjing, a lawyer involved in many pollution causes.

"Our circle of lawyers has a saying: in China, the big cases are about politics, the mid-sized cases are about influence and only the small cases deal with law," Zhang said.

Prague Astronomical clock figures being repaired (AP)

PRAGUE ? Four wooden figures on the Czech capital's famous medieval astronomical clock have been removed for repairs.

Clock keeper Petr Skala said Friday that the figures need a regular fix of paint to prevent humidity damage.

Skala said the clock ? installed on Prague's old-town hall in 1410 ? won't be shut down during the restoration. Legend has it that when the clock stops the capital faces catastrophe.

The figures being repaired include the clock tower's famous figure of Death ? represented by a skeleton.

The repairs will take about two months. On return, another four will be repaired.

Prague was hit by record flooding in 2002 just after the clock last ceased to operate.

This is all a work in progress for now. I plan to add several locations and some lore to those locations. Basically this is a sandbox and will be built from the ground up. Updates will be announced regularly. If you're wondering what this role play is going to be, well, I will give a hint towards a Game of Thrones feel. However, all content will be solely original and not based on any pre-existing material to the best of my knowledge.

I will answer any questions concerning characters, plots, themes, locations, etc., here.

Apple releases iOS 5.1 beta 3 to developers

Apple has released the third beta of iOS 5.1 to developers. iOS 5.1 beta 2 was released nearly a month ago, but now that the holiday lull is out of the way it's probably not going to take that long before the next beta comes out.

The beta is available both through over-the-air download and a direct download link on the Apple Developer Center website.

Once released, iOS 5.1 is expected to introduce improvements to Photo Stream and address battery life issues that some users, particularly iPhone 4S owners, have experienced in iOS 5.

Providence Medical Center offers Community Unique Orthopaedic Fracture Program

Send to friendSend to friend

Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., has created a unique program to serve the residents of Wyandotte and Leavenworth Counties called the Orthopaedic Fracture Program.

The Orthopaedic Fracture Program provides prompt evaluation and treatment of fractures for all adults, but is especially designed to care for geriatric patients.

Often, older adults experience fractures of the ankle, arm, wrist or hip as the result of a slip and fall.

In fact, more than 90 percent of hip fractures occur in adults who are 65 or older.

?I may see as many as three hip fracture patients a day now,? says John Vani, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon with Providence who was instrumental in helping create the Fracture Program. ?As our population ages, we can expect those numbers to increase in the coming years. ?By standardizing and streamlining patient care, Providence will be better equipped to care for patients in their 80s, 90s and 100s today and well into the future.?

The Providence Orthopaedic Fracture Program is modeled after the hospital?s successful Joint Center.

?Our goal is to standardize care and expedite the process from admission to surgery. We want to repair the patient?s fracture within 24 hours of being admitted to the hospital. We have shifted our thinking regarding fracture repair,? says Karen Orr, R.N., M.S.N., M.B.A., C.M.S.R.N., director of the Providence Joint and Spine Centers and the 4 North Surgical Unit. ?We now consider it an urgent surgery, rather than an elective surgery.?

Research shows promptly repairing the patient?s fracture results in a shorter length of stay, lower infection rates, dedicated patient care and reduced treatment costs.

The Providence Orthopaedic Fracture Program features a multidisciplinary team of providers including board-certified/eligible orthopaedic surgeons, internal medicine physicians, physiatrists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, registered nurses, pharmacists and case managers.

Fracture patients are cared for on the hospital?s newest surgical care unit, 4 North.

The program also emphasizes rehabilitation and individualized care; participation by family and/or friends who serve as the patient?s coaches during the recovery process; and coordinated education for patients and family members.

Like the Providence Joint Center, Fracture Program patients begin physical and occupational therapy the first day after surgery and participate in physical therapy daily.

?Early therapy is essential to the recovery process and helping our patients return to their pre-injury activity level,? Orr adds.

Another essential component of the Orthopaedic Fracture Program is communication with the patient?s orthopaedic and primary care physicians; coach/family members; and if necessary, the long-term care or skilled nursing facility the patient is released to.

?It?s important for our community to know that Providence has the only dedicated Fracture Program in Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties,? Dr. Vani says. ?If you or someone you know suffers a fracture, your chances of having a positive, long-term outcome are better if you come to Providence.?

For more information about the Providence Orthopaedic Fracture Program, call 913-596-4627 or visit www.providence-health.org.

Sony announces another in the Xperia line: the Xperia S

We only caught wind of the Sony Xperia S -- which is a decidedly beautiful Android 2.3 set -- launching at CES a couple hours ago, and here it is in all its black or white glory. Featuring a large 1280 x 720 4.3-inch display, a quick 1.5GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, and will be available in both 16 and 32GB versions -- but choose wisely as there's no internal storage expansion. The rear camera is a 12 megapixel affair featuring Sony's Exmor R backlit sensor, and a useable 1.3 megapixel cam up front to service all your video calling needs. The set should ship during Q1 this year but we'll be back in a few with some galleries and impressions as we learn more.

Sony announces another in the Xperia line: the Xperia S originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 19:28:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Astronomers reach new frontiers of dark matter

Monday, January 9, 2012

For the first time, astronomers have mapped dark matter on the largest scale ever observed. The results, presented by Dr Catherine Heymans of the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and Associate Professor Ludovic Van Waerbeke of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, are being presented today to the American Astronomical Society meeting in Austin, Texas. Their findings reveal a Universe comprised of an intricate cosmic web of dark matter and galaxies spanning more than one billion light years.

An international team of researchers lead by Van Waerbeke and Heymans achieved their results by analysing images of about 10 million galaxies in four different regions of the sky. They studied the distortion of the light emitted from these galaxies, which is bent as it passes massive clumps of dark matter during its journey to Earth.

Their project, known as the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS), uses data from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey. This accumulated images over five years using the wide field imaging camera MegaCam, a 1 degree by 1 degree field-of-view, 340 Megapixel camera on the CFHT in Hawaii.

Galaxies included in the survey are typically six billion light years away. The light captured by the images used in the study was emitted when the Universe was six billion years old ? roughly half the age it is today.

The team's result has been suspected for a long time from studies based on computer simulations, but was difficult to verify owing to the invisible nature of dark matter. This is the first direct glimpse at dark matter on large scales showing the cosmic web in all directions.

Professor Ludovic Van Waerbeke, from the University of British Columbia, said: "It is fascinating to be able to 'see' the dark matter using space-time distortion. It gives us privileged access to this mysterious mass in the Universe which cannot be observed otherwise. Knowing how dark matter is distributed is the very first step towards understanding its nature and how it fits within our current knowledge of physics."

Dr Catherine Heymans, a Lecturer in the University of Edinburgh's School of Physics and Astronomy, said: "By analysing light from the distant Universe, we can learn about what it has travelled through on its journey to reach us. We hope that by mapping more dark matter than has been studied before, we are a step closer to understanding this material and its relationship with the galaxies in our Universe."

Dr Christian Veillet, CFHT Executive Director, said "This dark matter study illustrates the strong legacy value of the CFHT Legacy Survey which is now enabling exciting results obtained by teams from many nations which use the images retrieved from the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre where they are archived and publicly available".

Professor Lance Miller, from Oxford University said: "This result has been achieved through advances in our analysis techniques which we are now applying to data from the Very Large Telescope's (VLT) Survey Telescope in Chile."

Professor Koen Kuijken, from Leiden University, said: "Over the next three years we will image more than 10 times the area mapped by CFHTLenS, bringing us ever closer to our goal of understanding the mysterious dark side of the Universe."

Euro jitters back amid bank woes, French bond sale (AP)

PARIS ? The specter of Europe's debt crisis returned Thursday after a brief respite, as bank stocks fell sharply on worries about losses on government debt and a French bond auction drew lackluster demand from investors.

Financial stocks slumped as it became clear banks would have trouble raising billions in new capital in coming months. In Italy, trading in UniCredit shares was halted after they lost a quarter of their value since yesterday morning, when the bank announced it had to offer huge discounts to investors to attract new capital.

The banks need the money to cover potential losses on government debt, whose value has plummeted across most of Europe in recent months on fear of defaults. Many countries in the region have to roll over billions in debt in coming months, putting huge focus on their bond auctions.

France raised euro7.96 billion ($10.31 billion) on Thursday, at the top of its goal, in an auction where demand was solid but far less than at the last sale in December. The borrowing rate for the 10-year bonds, which made up most of the auction amount, rose to 3.29 percent from 3.18 percent last time.

The sale also included 12-year, 24-year and 30-year bonds, and analyst Louise Cooper of BGC Partners said that just the fact that France was auctioning long-term debt indicated its position was fairly solid.

"When countries start to see their funding costs shoot up, then they issue short-term debt as this tends to be cheaper," she said. "Long-term funding is a sign of confidence in a country."

But she added that the demand level was "a little worrying, especially as France has a lot of debt to refinance this year."

The country is under close scrutiny since ratings agencies warned they could strip it of its top AAA grade because of the impact of the crisis and a looming recession on its public finances. A downgrade would likely push France's borrowing costs even higher.

France's banks are burdened with huge amounts of government bonds from weak countries like Greece, and boosting them with state money could be expensive ? and possibly trigger a downgrade for France.

Formerly routine affairs, European government bond auctions have become tense ordeals during the crisis. Countries that cannot raise money at reasonable rates must be rescued with bailout packages, and investors have grown concerned in recent months that even countries in the so-called European "core" could join that ignominious club. Thus far, only the relatively small economies of Greece, Ireland and Portugal have sought bailouts.

At the very least, if countries like France are forced to pay more to borrow money, they may become unwilling ? or unable ? to support their smaller neighbors.

After weeks of watching the bond yields of Italy, France and Spain rise, investors got a small respite this week. Germany and Portugal both sold bonds Wednesday at lower rates than previous auctions.

But France's auction result was not quite as good, while Hungary ? a non-euro member of the EU ? saw its borrowing rates jump higher in a bond sale of its own. The country's tense financial situation has deteriorated in recent weeks, pushing it to accept negotiations for a standby loan from the International Monetary Fund.

The bad news helped weaken sentiment in European markets, pushing the euro to $1.2798, a 15-month low against the dollar.

On the secondary market, where the issued bonds are later traded openly, the yield on 10-year bonds in Italy and Spain ? both considered too big to bail out ? were on the rise. Italy's rose above the psychologically sensitive level of 7 percent, which is considered unsustainable in the longer term.

European financial stocks were hit hard as the debt worries resurfaced. To protect banks against losses on government bonds, European governments are forcing them to keep more safe capital on hand. But raising that money has proved tricky for some, since investors are reluctant to buy their stock or bonds.

Italy's largest bank, UniCredit, announced Wednesday it would offer stock at a 69 percent discount to raise cash ? a disturbing sign of just how pressed banks are.

More bad news came Thursday, when the Financial Times reported that Spain's government thinks its banks will have to raise euro50 billion more than previously thought. That news sent Spanish bank stocks tumbling and contributed to losses in other countries. France's Societe Generale SA was down 5 percent, for example.

The continued volatility in markets is another sign that investors don't put much stock in the "solutions" unveiled at a summit last month that committed governments to a new treaty that would give European bureaucrats substantial oversight of their budgets.

Leaders hoped to reassure markets that overspending would never again threaten state solvency, but investors have noted that it does nothing to solve the immediate crisis ? the heart of which is rising bond yields ? and is unlikely to ever be enacted as strongly as it was conceived anyway.

Instead, they want the European Central Bank step in more forcefully to drive down borrowing costs by buying bonds in the open market, a practice it engages in only modestly right now. Analysts argue that would give governments time to enact longer-term solutions, like restoring credibility in their spending habits and allowing them to invest in growth. For now, governments can only slash spending to woo markets, but that also cripples already anemic growth and threatens to usher in a new recession.

Despite these challenges, French Prime Minister Francois Fillon promised on Thursday that France would invest in growth, by reducing the taxes companies pay on salaries, in the hopes of driving down the unemployment rate, which stands at 9.7 percent ahead of presidential elections this spring.

Fillon said France would cut debt with a new sales tax and by taxing financial transactions.

The latter is controversial since many have argued it will only work if applied across the European Union or even the world. Britain and the U.S. ? both of which are major centers of finance ? have strongly resisted it.

Fillon vowed France would push ahead.

"It's normal that all sectors participate in a collective effort, including the financial sector," he said.

The Best Jailbreak Apps for iOS 5 [Jailbreak]

The Best Jailbreak Apps for iOS 5It took a good while before iOS 5 received its first jailbreak, but now that you've jailbroken your compatible iDevice you need to know all the great apps and hacks it can handle. Here's a look at some of our favorites available in Cydia for iOS 5.

The Best Jailbreak Apps for iOS 5

Dreamboard

iOS theming has come a very long way, and that's all possible because of Dreamboard. There are plenty of great themes that complete change your iDevice's user interface. You can make it look like Android or Mac OS X Lion. It's pretty incredible. To use Dreamboard, you just install the app and choose the theme you want. If you want to use a theme that doesn't come pre-installed, just download it and copy it to the Dreamboard directory in the root of your iPhone. (You can use SSH or iExplorer to accomplish this.) Once you're done, just open Dreamboard and select the theme that you want. Dreamboard is known for overwriting lots of system files, though, so be sure to back up before you install!

Want this jailbreak hack? Search Cydia for Dreamboard to download and install it for free.

The Best Jailbreak Apps for iOS 5

Music Controls Pro

Music Controls Pro lets you control the?you guessed it!?music app from Notifications Center. It also shows album art, allows you to control volume, and send a song via AirPlay. You can try it out for free for five days, but the full version costs $6. There is a free version that's just called Music Controls, but at the time of this writing it has not been updated for iOS 5.

Want this jailbreak hack? Search Cydia for Music Controls Pro to download and install the trial for free. (After five days you'll need to pay for it to keep using it.)

The Best Jailbreak Apps for iOS 5

Zephyr

Zephyr adds mulitasking gestures to your iDevice. It'll let you do things like swipe up to show the multitasking drawer or quickly swipe between apps. (Click here for a video demonstration.) The gestures feel so natural that it's kind of surprising that they're not already a part of iOS. The downside? It'll cost you $3.

Want this jailbreak hack? Search Cydia for Zephyr to buy and install this tweak.

StatusGoogle

The Best Jailbreak Apps for iOS 5StatusGoogle is a very simple tweak that simply puts a search bar in Notification Center. Like any installable widget, you'll need to enable it int your Settings app's Notification Center settings, but once you do you'll be able to pull down the drawer and search from anywhere. (Note: You'll also want to edit the order of notifications in the Notification Center settings to put StatusGoogle at the top, otherwise the keyboard will cover it up when you try to search.)

Want this jailbreak hack? Search Cydia for StatusGoogle to download and install it for free.

The Best Jailbreak Apps for iOS 5

AnyLockApp

iOS 5 made it easier to access your camera by adding a button to your lock screen beside the "slide to unlock" bar. If you don't care about your camera and would like to have access to, say, Twitter instead, AnyLockApp will let you swap it in. You can swap in pretty much any app you have installed, so it's up to you.

Want this jailbreak hack? Search Cydia for AnyLockApp to download and install it for free.

The Best Jailbreak Apps for iOS 5

Activator

Activator has been around for awhile, but it's still one the best jailbreak hacks you can get. It allows you to set custom functions for any buttons on your device, as well as redefine existing multitouch gestures and set new ones. We've even written a guide on how it works. Many apps require it, so even if you don't install it yourself there's a good chance it'll get installed with another jailbreak hack. Activator is a good hack to have even if you think you won't use it.

Want this jailbreak hack? Search Cydia for Activator to download and install it for free.

The Best Jailbreak Apps for iOS 5

SBSettings

SBSettings, which stands for Springboard Settings, is a longtime favorite tweak that puts frequently-used settings in a drop-down menu at the top of your iDevice. You used to activate it by swiping from left to right on the top bar, but seeing as iOS 5 has claimed that space for its Notification Center that's not exactly an option anymore. Not to worry! SBSettings' latest update simply adds a Notification Center widget for iOS 5 users. After you install it, just go to the Settings app on your iDevice, then the Notification Center section, and find the SBSettings widget. Turn it on and your settings will always be available in a concise Notification Center panel.

Want this jailbreak hack? Search Cydia for SBSettings to download and install it for free.

The Best Jailbreak Apps for iOS 5

biteSMS

BiteSMS has always been one of the top jailbreak hacks that gets you a better, more feature-rich text messaging experience. It has been updated for iOS 5. Aside from allowing biteSMS to function inside of iOS 5, it adds support for Notification Center and a few nice visual enhancements, too.

Want this jailbreak hack? Search Cydia for biteSMS to download and install it for free (although some services associated with the app cost money).

The Best Jailbreak Apps for iOS 5

F.lux

F.lux is the handy tweak that changes the color of your screen for safer viewing in the afternoon and evening (or really anytime when there's less light). F.lux originated as a desktop app but was ported to iOS 4. Now it works with iOS 5, too. If your iDevice is providing a little eye strain and you don't mind your screen turning a little (or a lot) orange in the later hours of the day, it's a good tweak to have.

Want this jailbreak hack? Search Cydia for f.lux to download and install it for free.

A Few Extras

Despite the great improvements made in iOS 5, there are a surprising number of great jailbreak tweaks available. We couldn't fit them all on this list, so here are a few more worth checking out:

  • Intelliscreen - Your lock screen on steroids. If you don't think iOS 5's lock screen info is sufficient, you'll want to install this. It'll cost you $10, though (which is why it didn't make the big list).
  • QuickMemo - Adds a little notepad to Notification Center so you can jot down notes whenever the desire strikes.
  • RSSWidget - View your RSS feeds in Notifications Center.
  • NoNewsIsGoodNews - This tweak does one awesome thing: it kills Newsstand.
  • Favorite Contacts - Add your favorite contacts to Notification Center for quick dialing.

Search for any of the above names in Cydia to find them and download.

Some find hope in Afghan outcry over bride's abuse (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? Just 15 years old, Sahar Gul has become the bruised and bloodied face of women's rights in Afghanistan. The teenage bride's eyes were swollen nearly shut as she was wheeled into the hospital seven months after her arranged marriage. Black scabs crusted her fingertips where her nails used to be.

According to officials in northeastern Baghlan province, Gul's in-laws kept her in a basement for six months, ripped her fingernails out, tortured her with hot irons and broke her fingers ? all in an attempt to force her into prostitution. Police freed her after her uncle called authorities.

The horrific images, captured by television news cameras last week, transfixed Afghanistan and set off a storm of condemnation. President Hamid Karzai set up a commission to investigate, and his health minister visited her bedside. Police arrested her in-laws, who denied abusing her. A warrant was issued for her husband, who serves in the Afghan army.

The case highlights both the problems and the progress of women 10 years after the Taliban's fall. Gul's egregious wounds and underage wedlock are a reminder that girls and women still suffer shocking abuse. But the public outrage and the government's response to it also show that the country is slowly changing.

"Let's break the dead silence on women's plight," read the title of an editorial Wednesday in the Afghanistan Times.

Despite guaranteed rights and progressive new laws, Afghanistan still ranks as the world's sixth-worst country for women's equality in the U.N. Development Program's annual Gender Inequality Index. Nevertheless, Afghan advocates say attitudes have subtly shifted over the years, in part thanks to the dozens of women's groups that have sprung up.

Fawzia Kofi, a lawmaker and head of the women's affairs commission in the Afghan parliament, says the outcry over a case like Gul's probably would not have happened just a few years ago because of deep cultural taboos against airing private family conflicts and acknowledging sexual abuse ? such as forcing a woman into prostitution.

"I think there is now a sense of awareness about women's rights. People seem to be changing and seem to be talking about it," Kofi said.

Ending abuse of women is a huge challenge in a patriarchal society where traditional practices include child marriage, giving girls away to settle debts or pay for their relatives' crimes and so-called honor killings in which girls seen as disgracing their families are murdered by their relatives.

And some women activists worry that their hard-won political rights may erode as foreign troops withdraw and Karzai's government seeks to negotiate with the Taliban to end their insurgency. Women's rights, they fear, may be the first to go in any deal with the hardline Islamic militants.

"I'm afraid we won't have all this anymore if the Taliban are allowed back into society," said Sima Natiq, a longtime activist.

Freedoms for women are one of the most visible ? and symbolic ? changes in Afghanistan since 2001 U.S.-led campaign that toppled the Taliban regime. Aside from their support for al-Qaida leaders, the Taliban are probably most notorious for their harsh treatment of women under their severe interpretation of Islamic law.

For five years, the regime banned women from working and going to school, or even leaving home without a male relative. In public, all women were forced wear a head-to-toe burqa veil, which covers even the face with a mesh panel. Violators were publicly flogged or executed. Freeing women from such draconian laws lent a moral air to the Afghan war.

As U.S. troops begin to draw down, activists say Afghanistan is unmistakably a better place to be born female than a decade ago.

In parliament, 27 percent of lawmakers are female, mostly because the constitution reserves 68 seats for women. More than 3 million girls are in schools, making up 40 percent of the elementary school population, according to the education ministry. A survey last year indicated that women dying in childbirth had dropped by nearly two-thirds to below 500 per 100,000 live births since 2005, although that is still one of the world's highest rates.

Still, for every improvement, there are other signs of women's continued misery. The U.N. says more than half of Afghanistan's female prison population is made up of women sentenced by local courts for fleeing their marriages ? the charge is often phrased as "intent to commit adultery," even though that's not a crime under Afghan law. And the U.N. women's agency UNIFEM estimates that half of all girls are forced to marry under age 15, even though the legal marriage age is 16.

"There's very good standards on paper. There's very active women's networks," said Georgette Gagnon, the U.N.'s human rights director in Afghanistan. "A lot has been done, but there is still a long way to go."

A U.N. report in November also found that a 2009 law passed to protect Afghan women from violence was rarely enforced. For the 12-month period ending in March 2011, prosecutors filed indictments in 155 cases, only 7 percent of all 2,299 crimes reported. And activists say those complaints are a small fraction of the true level of abuse.

Part of the problem is the ingrained attitudes of police and courts that cause them to turn a blind eye or even send women back to their abusers, said Latifa Sultani, coordinator for women's protection with the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission.

"Some local officials still believe women shouldn't have rights," Sultani said.

Last month, Karzai pardoned a 19-year-old woman who was imprisoned after she was raped and impregnated by a cousin. A local court sentenced her to 12 years in prison for having sex out of wedlock, a crime in Afghanistan. The judge told her she could get out of prison if she agreed to marry her alleged rapist, but she refused and gave birth to her daughter in prison.

Passing laws that protect women is one thing, enforcing them is another. Women's groups are pressing Karzai to do more, but most acknowledge that with the central government so weak, the real battle will be fought in individual police stations, courtrooms and prosecutors' offices. Not least will be persuading Afghans to change their views.

That's why the gruesome story of Sahar Gul's imprisonment and torture is seen by some activists as an opportunity for the government to recommit publicly to women's rights. They say are encouraged that Karzai felt compelled by the outcry to become involved.

"This is a sign of progress in a way," Kofi said. "This is just a small example. We have hundreds of thousands of women like Sahar Gul who are victims of violence, but their voices are not heard."

For now, Gul remains in a Kabul hospital, where she transferred from a local hospital in Baghlan province. An Afghan official said this week that she will be sent to India for further medical treatment. It's unclear where she will go when she returns to Afghanistan.

Finally on TV, Bachmann reminds of Iowa roots (AP)

VALLEY JUNCTION, Iowa ? Michele Bachmann finally joined the Iowa television ad fray Monday, pushing her hometown connection and saying she stood up to President Barack Obama as other Republicans "were cutting deals" with the Democrat.

It was a late start for an ad campaign as Iowa Republicans head to caucuses on Tuesday. She's trailing badly.

The native-daughter theme also permeated a door-to-door walk by Bachmann through a quaint business district outside Des Moines.

An adviser said her ad was airing on Fox cable stations and NBC affiliates across Iowa instead of a full-range purchase, a clear sign she is low on cash. She had a more visible TV ad presence before a nonbinding test vote she won this summer.

The ad twice mentions Bachmann's Iowa heritage and calls her "one of our own." It talks of her background as a federal tax attorney ? she worked to collect debts for the IRS ? and describes her as a "consistent conservative fighter" who won't back down.

Bachmann was born in Waterloo but later moved with her family to Minnesota, where she was elected to Congress in 2006.

While campaigning Monday, Bachmann stressed her native-state status.

"I believe without a shadow of a doubt that Iowans want to get behind their values and I believe I best represent their values," she said after fighting her way through thick crowds at some businesses.

Addressing reporters, she contrasted herself with her opponents and lobbed her hardest shot yet at Rick Santorum. The former Pennsylvania senator has rocketed to contender status while she has remained at the back of the GOP field, recent polls show.

Bachmann criticized Santorum for supporting a symbol of wasteful Washington spending, Alaska's "Bridge to Nowhere." She also jabbed him for once endorsing Sen. Arlen Specter, then a fellow Pennsylvania Republican who joined the Democratic Party in 2009. "Arlen Specter supplied the 60th vote that gave us Obamacare and gave us taxpayer-funded abortions. I never would have supported Arlen Specter, who is a pro-abortion candidate," she said.

Bachmann has bet her success on support among evangelical Christian voters and said she expects full congregations to caucus on her behalf.

She insists she'll go on no matter what happens Tuesday night. She and her top campaign advisers have tickets to South Carolina ? opting to head there rather than New Hampshire, which votes one week from Tuesday, on Jan. 10. The Bachmann team will fly commercial rather than on chartered flights like other campaigns with more money at their disposal.

Supporters who greeted her Monday said they weren't giving up hope for a strong finish.

Larry and Mary Abbott, retirees from Des Moines, said they intended to caucus for Bachmann no matter what the polls reflect.

"I think the polls are wrong," Larry Abbott said.

The Abbotts said they were getting daily contacts from the campaign and were confident in her chances.

"People are going to be surprised," he said.

"I hope they are," added Mary Abbott.

GOP hopefuls make late Iowa push

by Nia-Malika Henderson - Jan. 1, 2012 11:41 PM
Washington Post

DES MOINES, Iowa - Seeking to press their advantages and differentiate themselves, the Republican candidates for president flooded the Iowa airwaves Sunday and stepped up their ground games in the final push before decision day.

Some went to church, others were on on buses and at least one -- Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas -- was somewhere else entirely, ringing in the new year back in his home state.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., buoyed by a Des Moines Register poll that showed him among the top three contenders, sought to distinguish himself as the only "full-spectrum conservative" in the race; it was an effort to ding former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and appeal to social conservatives, who could be the decisive voting bloc should they coalesce around a single candidate.

"My surge is going to come on January 3 after the people of Iowa do what they do, which is actually analyze the candidates, figure out where their positions are, find out who's the right leader, who's got what it takes to defeat Barack Obama and to lead this country," Santorum said in an interview on "Meet the Press." "We've got a great grass-roots organization."

Santorum sought to paint Romney, whose essential argument for support is his electability, as a moderate who can't be trusted to push a conservative agenda.

But Santorum had to answer questions about his 2008 endorsement of Romney and about seeming to change his own views on abortion based on political calculus.

Santorum, who signed a pledge opposing all types of abortion, including in cases of rape and incest, said passing that kind of legislation is politically difficult. "Today I would support laws that would provide for those exceptions; but I'm not for them," he said. "Yes, I support laws that provide those exceptions, because if we can get those passed, then we need to do that."

Romney, on a bus tour in Atlantic, Iowa, reminded reporters of Santorum's 2008 endorsement and pressed his case that he was the best candidate to beat Obama on the economy.

"Like Speaker Gingrich, Senator Santorum has spent his career in government, in Washington," Romney said. "Nothing wrong with that, but it's a very different background than I have. And I think that the people of this country recognize that with our economy as the major issue we face right now, that it would be helpful to have someone who understands the economy firsthand, who spent the bulk of his career working in the private sector."

With just hours left, the race remains topsy-turvy, with nearly half of voters saying that they have yet to make up their minds. The key questions are whether social conservatives will rally around a single candidate, as they did for former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in 2008, or continue to be splintered among several. There is also the possibility that they buy Romney's electability argument and rally around him.

Santorum, in his ground campaign, has argued that he should be the candidate of social conservatives and that they should not just "settle" for Romney. And evangelicals, not yet sold on Romney, could decide to send a message Tuesday that they still matter and that the eventual nominee must take them seriously.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., battered by an onslaught of negative ads and somewhat hampered by his pledge to run a positive campaign, started his Sunday with Mass at St. Ambrose Cathedral, where Des Moines Bishop Richard Pates referenced the nasty campaign rhetoric flooding the airwaves.

After the service, Gingrich took a swipe at Romney, breaking sharply from his pledge.

Gingrich told reporters that Romney "would buy the election if he could" and accused Romney of lying. "Someone who will lie to you to get to be president," Gingrich said, "will lie to you when they are president." Gingrich also signaled that he intended to go negative on Romney with new ads in New Hampshire.

Paul plans to make his final rounds today in a series of events with his son, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who is becoming a familiar face to Iowa voters and remains a "tea party" standard-bearer.

Paul, a 12-term congressman who is in a virtual tie with Santorum and Romney in Iowa, sat for three Sunday show interviews.
