Power station fire under control

About 100 firefighters are tackling a severe blaze at the power station

A huge blaze which engulfed a power station at Tilbury in Essex has been brought under control, firefighters say.

More than 120 firefighters tackled the blaze, which started in a storage area containing about 4,000 tonnes of wood pellets at about 07:45 GMT.

Crews are now inside the building, using foam spray to starve the flames of oxygen.

A fire service spokesman said the fire could continue for some time.

Plant owner RWE npower said all employees had been accounted for.

Chief Fire Officer David Johnson, incident commander, said the fire was one of the most challenging he had dealt with in his 20-year career.

"It has taken us some time to establish that the structure of the building is safe enough for us to commit crews," he said.

'Punishing conditions'

"But firefighters in breathing apparatus are now inside the building.

"They are doing an absolutely fantastic job in dangerous and punishing conditions.

"Inside the building it's hot, full of smoke and extremely dusty."

Extra stocks of foam are being brought in to tackle the blaze, which took hold in the north end of the power station.

Concerns had been raised about the structure of the building, as water was initially sprayed onto the pellets which increased their weight.

But high-expansion foam was later used as it was lighter than water and would not affect the weight of the wood.

Tilbury Power Station was built to burn coal, but was recently granted consent to burn biomass fuel and wood materials.

Biomass plants burn wood pellets, generally made from compacted sawdust or other wastes.

Mr Johnson said it was too early to say what caused the blaze.

Military drama "Act of Valor" claimed the No. 1 spot on movie box office charts, beating expectations with an estimated $24.7 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales during another busy weekend at theaters.

Tyler Perry's new drama, "Good Deeds," finished in second place with $16.0 million, according to studio estimates released on Sunday as Hollywood prepared for the Academy Awards.

"Act of Valor" stars real-life, active-duty U.S. Navy SEALs alongside professional actors in a fictional story about a mission to rescue a kidnapped CIA agent. Some scenes used live fire rather than visual effects.

Audiences liked the movie, awarding an "A" grade in polling by survey firm CinemaScore and providing high marks in studio exit polls, said Kyle Davies, president of worldwide theatrical distribution for Relativity Media, the independent studio that released the film. "You don't get a consistent reaction like that unless the movie delivers," he said.

The movie attracted a 71 percent male audience, and 60 percent of filmgoers were older than age 25, Relativity said. The studio acquired the film for $13 million and had projected opening weekend sales of up to $17 million.

Perry's "Good Deeds" finished in line with projections from distributor Lions Gate Entertainment. In the film, Perry plays a CEO controlled by his domineering mother until a friendship with a woman on the office cleaning crew inspires him to rebel.

One of Hollywood's most successful filmmakers, Perry also wrote, produced and directed the movie. It was his first central film role not based on Madea, the foul-mouthed grandmother he is famous for playing on stage and screen.

The audience for "Good Deeds" was 76 percent female and 85 percent older than 25. Sales rose 25 percent from Friday night to Saturday night, Lions Gate said. Audiences awarded an "A" grade in CinemaScore polling.

Overall the weekend produced the eighth consecutive winner for Hollywood compared with last year. Sales for all movies came in 24 percent ahead of the same period a year ago, according to the box office division of Hollywood.com. Year-to-date sales were nearly 18 percent ahead of 2011.

In third place, family film "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson took in $13.5 million during its third weekend in domestic theaters. The movie's total sales worldwide have topped $235 million.

Rounding out the top five, Denzel Washington thriller "Safe House" grabbed $11.4 million and love story "The Vow" grossed $10.0 million. Both movies were in their third weekends of release.

Two other new films couldn't crack the top five.

Comedy "Wanderlust" rung up $6.6 million, earning eighth place. The movie stars Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd as a stressed Manhattan couple who start a new life in a commune. Universal and Relativity produced the film for about $30 million.

"Gone," a new thriller starring Amanda Seyfried, pulled in $5.0 million domestically and finished in ninth place. The movie tells the story of a woman trying to find a serial killer who has abducted her sister.

Among films competing for Oscars later on Sunday, black-and-white silent movie "The Artist" pulled in $3.0 million, bringing its domestic total to $31.9 million. George Clooney drama "The Descendants" grossed $2.2 million for a cumulative total of $78.5 million at domestic theaters.

Lions Gate's Summit Entertainment unit distributed "Gone." "Safe House" and "Wanderlust" were released by Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp. Time Warner Inc unit Warner Bros released "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. Sony Corp's film studio distributed "The Vow."

Squid of many species have been seen to 'fly' using the same jet-propulsion mechanisms that they use to swim: squirting water out of their mantles so that they rocket out of the sea and glide through the air. Until now, most researchers have thought that such flight was a way to avoid predators1, but Ronald O?Dor, a marine biologist at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, has calculated that propelling themselves through the air may actually be an efficient way for squid to travel long distances.

The creatures are rarely seen flying, so some researchers argue that the mode of travel is not widespread in migration, but over years of study O?Dor has gathered hints that the behaviour is more common than was thought. Since the 1970s, he has been keeping Northern shortfin squid, Illex illecebrosus, in a 15-metre indoor pool. At first, his research team would often find dead squid around the pool in the morning, the creatures having jumped out of the water over night. ?It was clear that if two or three died every night we were going to run out of animals fairly quickly,? says O?Dor. The team ultimately lowered the water level to keep the squid in.

Further evidence came from Julia Stewart, a marine biologist at Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University in Pacific Grove, California, who uses tagging to track Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas). Her recent work found that they travelled faster than anyone had seen before. ?The question this raised in my mind was, ?Maybe they really are flying??? says O?Dor.

Up in the air In research that Stewart will present2 today at the American Geophysical Union?s Ocean Sciences Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah, O?Dor, Stewart and others studied a set of photographs taken by amateur photographer Bob Hulse in 2009 off the coast of Brazil. Hulse shot rapid-succession pictures of what the researchers believe were orange-back squid (Sthenoteuthis pteropus), a small cephalopod with a body length (excluding arms and tentacles) of around 6 centimetres, leaping out of the water.

Because they knew the intervals of time between each photo, O?Dor and his colleagues were able to estimate the squid?s velocity and acceleration, and compare them with these values for squid in water. They found that the velocity in air while the squid were propelling themselves with the water jet was five times faster than than any measurements O?Dor had made for comparable squid species in water.

?It makes perfect sense that these species are using flight as a way of saving energy,? says O?Dor. Some species spend vast amounts of energy migrating each year; for example, I. illecebrosus travels more than 1,000 kilometres down the North American coast to spawn.

?I could never explain how they could get this much energy?, even given evidence that females eat the males as they make the journey, says O?Dor. ?As soon as we thought about the possibility that these things flew, it became plausible that these animals actually use flight as a way of reducing energy cost.?

But Richard Young, a retired oceanographer at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu who sent the photos to O?Dor, and who collected a specimen of a closely related species that O?Dor?s team used to estimate the size of S. pteropus, thinks it is more probable that the squid fly to avoid predators. ?If it were a likely possibility, you'd see squid popping out of the water and popping out of the water again. It?s very rare to see them fly at all. As far as I know nobody has ever seen them doing it in a sequence,? he says.

Yet Young agrees that the findings are surprising and exciting. ?It?s the first time we?ve ever had any information comparing flight in air with flight in water.?

O?Dor proposes to estimate what proportion of time squid spend above water by fitting the creatures with tags that measure acceleration. From there, his team could move on to investigate the gliding part of the squid?s flight, not just the rocketing, he says.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? He's eluded authorities for more than five years, a mountain man who roams the wilderness of southern Utah, breaking into remote cabins in winter, living in luxury off hot food, alcohol and coffee before stealing provisions and vanishing into the woods.

Investigators have clawed for clues, scouring cabins for fingerprints that match no one and chasing reports of brief encounters only to come up short, always a step behind the mysterious recluse.

They've found abandoned camps, dozens of guns, high-end outdoor gear stolen from the homes and trash strewn around the forest floor.

But the man authorities say is armed and dangerous and responsible for more than two dozen burglaries has continued to outrun the law across a swath of mountains not far from Zion National Park. He's roamed across 1,000 square miles of rugged wilderness where snow can pile 10 feet deep in winter.

And while there have been no violent confrontations, detectives say he's a time bomb. Lately he has been leaving the cabins in disarray and riddled with bullets after defacing religious icons, and a recent note left behind in one cabin warned, "Get off my mountain."

"You wouldn't want to come across that guy," said Iron County Det. Jody Edwards, who has been working the case since 2007.

Theories about his identity have ranged from a 42-year-old man on the FBI's Most Wanted List sought for the 2004 killing of an armored-truck guard in Phoenix to a castaway from the nearby compounds of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the polygamous sect run by jailed leader Warren Jeffs.

The FBI recently discounted the theory that the man was their fugitive after authorities got the first pictures of him from a motion-triggered surveillance camera outside a cabin showing a sandy-haired man in camouflage on snowshoes, a rifle slung over his shoulder. The photos were captured sometime in December.

"We believe that is not Jason Derek Brown," FBI special agent Manuel Johnson told The Associated Press.

However, Edwards isn't so quick to rule out the possibility, given the close resemblance to Brown, who was raised Mormon and is a highly educated, well-traveled avid outdoorsman.

So while detectives believe they are getting close, buoyed by the recent photos, the shadowy survivalist remains an enigma. No missing person report appears to fit, and fingerprints lifted from cabins have yielded no match.

Meanwhile, cabin owners are growing more frightened by the day and are left wondering who might be sleeping in their beds this winter.

"He's scaring the daylights out of cabin owners. Now everyone's packing guns," said Jud Hendrickson, a 62-year-old mortgage advisor from nearby St. George who keeps a trailer in the area.

In November 2010, Bruce Stucki, another cabin owner, said a burglar broke into his cabin through a narrow window, pried open a gun case with a crowbar and laid out the weapons but took none. At a nearby cabin, the man reportedly took only the grips from gun handles.

"He could stand in the trees and pop you off and no one would know who killed you," Stucki said.

Some cabins he has left tidy and clean, while others he has practically destroyed, even defecating in one in a pan on the floor.

"He should know he's being followed, but I don't think this guy is normal in any way," said Stucki, who, like many cabin owners, has a lot of his own theories.

"He's anti-religious, waiting for the mothership to come in," Stucki speculated.

Investigators say they have found several of the man's unattended summer camps, what they initially thought were left behind by "doomsday" believers preparing for some sort of apocalypse because of the remote locations and supplies like weapons, radios, batteries, dehydrated food and camping gear.

Edwards said two camps found a few years ago were stocked with 19 guns. One of the camps also had a copy of Jon Krakauer's "Into the Wild," a book about a young man who died after wandering into the Alaskan wilderness to live alone off the land.

The cabin burglar has managed to avoid being seen all but twice over the years, each time retreating into the forest.

The coffee and alcohol the survivalist favors plays into some cabin owners' assessment that he could be a castaway from the nearby twin towns of Hildale or Colorado City on the Utah-Arizona border. The so-called lost boys are said to be regularly booted from the polygamous sect there by elders looking to increase their marriage opportunities with young women.

Unlike members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which discourages consumption of alcohol and coffee, many of the Mormon fundamentalists imbibe.

Detectives aren't sharing their latest assessments but "we've got a lot of leads" from the surveillance photos, Edwards said. "I would say we're very close to making a positive ID on him. We just got to catch this guy."

To cabin owners in southern Utah, he remains a spooky and menacing figure.

"We feel like we're being subject to terrorism by this guy," Hendrickson said. "My wife says flat-out she's not going back to our trailer until they catch him."

Ray Charles Foundation wants $3M gift back

Atlanta?? The Ray Charles Foundation is demanding the return of a $3 million gift given to Albany State University a decade ago because the organization says the college has yet to use the money to build a performing arts center in the late artist's name.

In 2001, Charles gave the south Georgia school $1 million and donated another $2 million a year later after receiving an honorary doctorate from the college. The native of Albany, Ga., died in 2004 at age 73.

The money was given solely for the construction of the performing arts center, yet it only exists "on the drawing board and in an unapproved downsized plan," the foundation said in a statement.

Charles was specific on how the money was to be spent, said foundation president Valerie Ervin.

"It is incomprehensible that Albany State University failed to use the money in the manner Mr. Charles wanted. Mr. Charles would find ASU's behavior unacceptable," she said.

Albany State University spokesman Demetrius Love said the gift was never restricted and that the school continues to pursue additional funding for the building, which is expected to cost at least $23 million.

The 2001 donation still is in a bank and the $2 million gift was given to 125 students chosen to be Ray Charles Presidential Scholars, according to the university. Officials said the donation was the largest gift the university has ever received.

"It has been a long and tedious process, but strides have been made in accomplishing this goal," Love said in an email statement. "Albany State University will continue in its efforts of honoring Mr. Ray Charles by constructing a fine arts building in his name."

Plans for the project have stalled in recent years because of a lack of state funding amid budget cuts.

In October, the university's legal counsel sent a letter to the foundation reiterating their desire to move forward with the building project, which also includes a theater to be named for Charles' mother. The university has received additional state funding to support the design phase of the building, the letter said.

"When Mr. Charles made the two separate gifts to the University, he did so without restrictions," the letter reads. "The University does believe that a Fine Arts Building named after Mr. Charles, with a theatre named in honor of Mr. Charles' mother, Mrs. Aretha Robinson, is one of the ways to do 'the right thing.' The University has been working tirelessly towards that goal."

US sex abuse lawsuit against Vatican dismissed (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Lawyers for a man who was sexually abused decades ago by a priest at a Wisconsin school for the deaf have asked a court to dismiss their lawsuit naming Pope Benedict XVI and other top Vatican officials as defendants.

Attorney Jeff Anderson had filed the lawsuit at the peak of a European explosion of the sex abuse scandal in 2010, alleging that the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and his deputies knew about allegations of sexual abuse at St. John's School for the Deaf and prevented internal punishment of the accused priest, the late Rev. Lawrence Murphy.

The lawsuit had helped shift the blame for priestly sex abuse in the public mind away from bishops ? who are responsible for their priests ) to the Vatican and Benedict himself.

The Vatican at the time had rejected the lawsuit as a publicity stunt.

Anderson's firm filed a voluntary motion to dismiss in U.S. district court in Milwaukee Friday. Emails seeking comment weren't returned Saturday.

The dismissal of the suit now leaves Anderson with one main sex abuse lawsuit naming the Holy See as a defendant, a case in Oregon. In 2010 a lawsuit against the Holy See was dismissed in Kentucky after the lawyer for the victim withdrew it.
