JetBlue suspends captain after in-flight meltdown

JetBlue announced Wednesday that it is suspending the captain whose bizarre behavior prompted his fellow co-pilot to lock him out of the cockpit on a flight from New York to Las Vegas.?

Clayton Osbon, 49, ?has been a pilot at JetBlue since 2000, the airline's first year of flying. The company said a "medical situation" occurred onboard the plane on Tuesday but wouldn't elaborate.

Passengers said the pilot was yelling and acting unruly in the cabin after he was locked out of the cockpit. A group of passengers tackled the captain and restrained him until the plane landed in Amarillo, Texas.

JetBlue spokeswoman Allison Steinberg said Wednesday that Osbon was taken off active duty pending review of the incident.?

Two passengers aboard JetBlue Flight 191 recounted Wednesday the dramatic and bizarre situation of the plane's captain leaving the cockpit, acting erratically and eventually being subdued. JetBlue's CEO, meanwhile, said the captain was a "consummate professional."

The captain "became increasingly agitated," passenger Tony Antolino told TODAY's Ann Curry, adding that several passengers grabbed the pilot, "tackled him to the ground" and sat on him.

Osbon, since charged with interfering with a flight crew?and now getting medical care, left the cockpit, tried to enter an occupied lavatory and then became increasingly agitated when he couldn't get back into the cockpit.

"The first thing I saw was the captain running down the aisle," passenger Laurie Dhue said on TODAY, adding he was "banging on the door, saying 'Let me in! Let me in!' " Dhue credited the "brave people on board" for handling the situation, saying it was "literally like a scene from a movie."

JetBlue CEO Dave Barger, also appearing on TODAY, told host Matt Lauer that he knew the captain personally and said there were no signs that pointed to the in-flight meltdown.

"It was a true team effort at 35,000 feet yesterday," Barger said of the response by passengers and crew.

Flight 191 was scheduled from John F. Kennedy Airport to Las Vegas, but was diverted to Amarillo, Texas.

On Tuesday, Antolino told NBC New York the captain began yelling about an unspecified threat linked to Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. "They're going to take us down, they're taking us down, they're going to take us down. Say the Lord's prayer, say the Lord's prayer," the captain screamed, according to Antolino.

A JetBlue flight made an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas, Tuesday after the pilot had a "medical situation" and had to be restrained by passengers. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

John Cox, an aviation safety consultant and former airline pilot, told the Associated Press that incidents in which pilots become mentally incapacitated during a flight are "pretty rare." He said he could only recall two or three other examples in the more than 40 years he has been following commercial aviation.

Airlines and the FAA strongly encourage pilots to assert themselves if they think safety is being jeopardized, even if it means contradicting a captain's orders, Cox said. Aviation safety experts have studied several cases where first officers deferred to more experienced captains with tragic results.

In-flight outbursts by airline crewmembers are rare, but they do happen.

Earlier this month, an American Airlines flight attendant was taken off a plane for rambling about 9/11 and her fears that the plane would crash. "I'm not responsible for this plane crashing," the crew member said over the public-address system, according to passengers.?Passengers wrestled the flight attendant into a seat while the plane was grounded at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport; the flight attendant was hospitalized.

In 2008, an Air Canada co-pilot was forcibly removed from a Toronto-to-London flight, restrained and sedated after having a mental breakdown on a flight.

The FAA is likely to review the unidentified captain's medical certificate ? essentially a seal of approval that the pilot is healthy. All pilots working for scheduled airlines must have a first-class medical certificate. The certificates must be renewed every six months to a year, depending on the pilot's age. To receive the certificate, the pilot must receive a physical examination by an FAA-designated medical examiner that includes questions about pilot's psychological condition. Pilots are required to disclose all physical and psychological conditions and medications.

Passenger Charlie Restivo thought it was clear the pilot suffered a medical episode. "I don't think when he got up this morning that that's what he was intending to do," Restivo told the AP. "Unfortunately, I just think it happened to him."

Auto Memory Manager (for Android)

I noticed my Motorola Droid 2 has been acting rather sluggish lately. I figured, whenever a computer needs a performance boost, one of the most obvious ways is to upgrade or at least, manage memory, so why not on my phone? As I am not very familiar with native memory management on Adroid devices, I found a useful app for managing memory, the free ad-supported? Auto Memory Manager (there's also a?premium version without ads).? Without formally benchmarking my phone pre-and post-install of the app, it's hard to determine how much it improves performance. In day-to-day use, my phone has less freezing and seems peppier since install. Once thing for sure, Auto Memory Manager provides me with good insight into how an Android device uses memory, and that alone makes it an attractive install.

How Auto Memory Manager Works
Auto Memory Manager works on rooted or unrooted phones. An app such as this is handy for those like me, who are trying to get more familair with Android memory settings. Yes, I can go into Settings-->Applications-->Running Services and see how much remaining RAM I have or see how much memory an app is using, but without a deep? of the Android OS, it can be hard to get more memory details.

There?s also the Android SDK and the Dalvik Debug Monitoring tool (DDMS). With it, you can pull a memory usage chart but the chart only gives generic information such as percentage of memory free or inactive and not much else.

Auto Memory Manager allows you to speed up your phone without having to use task manager. It?s a 1.2MB-sized app and can be installed on Android devices running versions 1.5 or higher.

Memory Thresholds
The app lets you set six memory thresholds to tweak performance:
Foreground Applications: Apps that you can currently see on screen. System and Phone are included in this group.

Visible Applications: Apps which are visible to the user but not running forefront.

Secondary Server: Apps and services running in the background. This group includes SenseUI and Launcher.

Hidden Applications: Apps that are not visible but are still running in the background.

Content Provider: Processes that provide content such as Contact and Calendar apps.

Empty Applications: Apps that are in standby and not doing any work.

You can set thresholds levels for a pre-defined group of applications. For instance, by setting the threshold level for the Empty Applications group to 40MB, if the phone?s available memory falls below 40MB then the system will kill empty applications to free up memory.

There are three threshold levels: Aggressive (the highest setting), Mild: (the average setting), and Default (whichkeeps you Android device's original settings).

Auto Memory Manager?s default level is set so that Empty Applications are first to get killed when less than 40MB of memory is available. Foreground apps are given highest priority, only killed if there is less that 6MB of memory available. These settings are customizable.

There?s a ?Preferences? setting for further customization. Users can allow the app to send a developer an email when an error occurs as well as allow the collection of data usage.?

Auto Memory Manager also displays running processes and provides more details than the native ?Running Services? or when viewing cached services on my Droid. In Auto Memory Manager, you can see the Out of Memory priority (OOM) of each service. OOM is scaled from -16, the highest priority to +15, the lowest priority. Auto Memory manager also shows associated software running in each process. What?s really informative is that each process is grouped into one of the six threshold levels that? the app uses, so you can set threshold levels depending on what services and processes are most important.

I had only one issue; a crash when viewing processes. I had to force the app to close.

No mention of the president or the "crisis," as it's known in Syrian officialdom. But on Friday, Assad is set to join her husband on the long list of Syrian officials and institutions on the European Union's sanctions list. It is her shopping habits that highlight this latest round of sanctions. He, in turn, emailed her the lyrics of country musician Blake Shelton's song "God Gave Me You" which goes, "The person that I've been lately, ain't who I want to be. But you stay here right beside me, and watch as the storm blows through."

In an e-mail The Telegraph obtained, Asma joked to a friend about their relationship: "As for listening, I am the REAL dictator, he has no choice."

The e-mails do not reveal Assad true feelings about the violence in any depth, the worst of which has been in her family's ancestral city of Homs. In a January e-mail to a friend following a speech by the president, she writes, "very strong, no more messing around," according to The Telegraph.

She also makes a personal appeal for a 60 year-old communist with medical conditions who she feels was wrongfully arrested. "Kindly transfer him to court, particularly as his hands are not tainted with blood," she writes.

It's not the general light-heartedness or confidence of the e-mails that has infuriated Syrians in the opposition, but rather the gall of the lavish spending sprees.

"She is one of the robbers. The price of her shoes is enough to feed three families in Syria for one year," activist Omar al-Muqdad, now in Turkey, told ABC News. "She is an important part of our pain."

Assad was born to a Syrian cardiologist in London. After high school she studied computer science at King's College London before going into investment banking. She met the future president while on holiday in Syria and started dating him while he was studying in London to be an opthamologist in London, before his brother died and he had been named heir. They married in 2000 after once became president and have had three children together.

One of the e-mails The Guardian published reveals that at the end of January, the daughter of the emir of Qatar, a strong supporter of the Syrian uprising, wrote to Asma Assad to say that, "i only pray that you will convince the president to take this as an opportunity to exit without having to face charges?i am sure you have many places to turn to, including doha."

Regardless of how long the conflict drags on and how it ends, Asma Assad's silent support of her husband has ensured that the bloom is undoubtedly off the "desert rose."

Porsche 918 hybrid supercar rolls out of our dreams, onto the tarmac

Concepts, concepts, darned concepts. Teasing us with their curvy lines, and never-to-be-seen futuristic promise. Every once in a while, though, one pops out from the drawing board and into reality -- the Porsche 918 hybrid supercar being one such example. We'll admit we drooled a little when we saw the initial shots, and trembled slightly at the real world concept outed at the Geneva Motor Show 18 months ago. So, knowing it's finally made it out on the track filled us with more than a little glee. It seems development is coming along just fine, with three test versions out in the wild, and our friends over at Autoblog were lucky enough to get a ride in one of them. Sure, it was "only" at half power, so not the full roar of that 770 horsepower engine, but we're still pretty jelly. The $845,000 price tag might make you wince a little, but tears of joy will wash any pain away 3.1 seconds later, as you hit that magical 60mph. You've got until September 18th next year to save up the pennies, or ogle the gallery below.
