Ugly jobs numbers rattle Obama's re-election bid

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Nothing upsets a president's re-election groove like ugly economic numbers.

A spring slowdown in hiring and an uptick in the unemployment rate are weighing on Barack Obama, while enhancing Republican challenger Mitt Romney's argument that the president is in over his head.

Some questions and answers about how Friday's economic news may play in a close presidential race:

Q: How bad is this for Obama?

A: Pretty awful. Polls show Obama's handling of the economy is his biggest weak spot. Americans overwhelmingly rate the economy as their biggest worry. And jobs are what they say matters most.

But the president still has time for the jobs outlook to improve. Five more monthly unemployment reports are due ? the last coming just four days before the Nov. 6 election. The fall numbers will mean more when voters head to the polls.

Q: What can Obama tell voters if the job picture stays bleak?

A: After 3 1/2 years in office, it's getting harder to blame the painfully slow recovery on the mistakes of his predecessor, George W. Bush. But Obama keeps reminding Americans how bad things were when he took office in January 2009. The economy was deep into the Great Recession and losing jobs month after bleak month.

In contrast, over the past two years, Obama notes, businesses have been consistently adding jobs ? just not as quickly as needed.

He's also tried shifting blame to congressional Republicans, saying they've held up the recovery by refusing to pass most elements of his jobs bill. And he says some factors dragging down the U.S. economy are beyond a president's control, such as the European economic crisis and fluctuating gasoline prices. The weakening economy in China and turbulence in the Middle East haven't helped, either.

Q: Is Romney seizing this opportunity?

A: With both hands. The lousy jobs numbers fit neatly into Romney's central campaign pitch: That guy doesn't have a clue how to fix the economy, so let me get it done.

He called the jobs news "devastating" and a "harsh indictment" of Obama. Romney says his own experience with a private equity firm, making millions of dollars by overhauling struggling companies, taught him how to revive the economy and create jobs.

Q: So which guy do the voters believe?

A: It's a toss-up so far.

There hasn't been time to measure the impact of Friday's figures. But in an Associated Press-GfK poll last month, people were split over who they'd trust most to handle the economy, Romney or Obama. Asked specifically whether they approve of the way Obama has dealt with unemployment, about half did and half didn't, mostly along party lines.

Still, jobs are clearly a weakness for Obama. His poll numbers are stronger than Romney's on many other qualities, such as which candidate understands regular people, is a strong leader and says what he really believes.

He may benefit from the perception that the mess is so big no one knows what to do. In an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, two-thirds of those surveyed said they were only somewhat confident or not at all confident that Obama has the right goals and policies to improve the economy. Asked this about Romney, three-quarters were only somewhat or not at all confident.

Q: Sure, people care about jobs, but do they really follow the latest economic reports?

A: One number seems to break through: the unemployment rate. That easy-to-understand figure ? representing what share of Americans are looking for work and can't find it ? edged up to 8.2 percent in May, from 8.1 percent the month before.

And Obama has yet to get it down to even the troublingly high 7.8 percent in place when he took office. (It zoomed to a peak of 10 percent in October 2009.)

Since the government began closely tracking unemployment in 1948, no president has won re-election with numbers as high as those Obama's staring down. The champ is Ronald Reagan, who coasted to a second term in 1984 despite 7.4 percent unemployment in October. And a far greater percentage of Americans were out of work in 1936, when Franklin Roosevelt won re-election in a landslide amid the Great Depression.

Prospects for the unemployment rate to drop sharply before November aren't good. The economy needs to generate at least 125,000 jobs per month just to keep up with population growth ? a mark it's fallen far short of for the past two months. And it would take tens of thousands more jobs each month to bring the rate down.

Q: Couldn't the economic outlook brighten before Election Day?

A: It might. Some economists think the weakness could be temporary, reflecting the fallout from an unusually warm winter and technical issues that can sway the government's numbers. Consumer spending and exports remain solid, says Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, and the outlook may bounce back to last winter's optimism.

Or the weak report could mark the beginning of a stall in the already sluggish recovery. Discouraging numbers can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Just look at the way they drove the stock market down 275 points Friday ? the worst trading day of the year. That sort of thing rattles the business leaders who make hiring decisions.

And many of them are feeling queasiness about world events.

"Europe is the key swing factor," Zandi said.

If Europe addresses its financial troubles, and keeps Greece in the eurozone, the financial markets are likely to settle, he said, and boost U.S. employers' confidence. But if Europe slowly worsens, it will be a drag on the U.S. economy.

By Election Day, the employment picture may look rosier ? or glum.

Olympic Trials provided boost to local economy | TheGazette

The Iowa City and Coralville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau announced Friday that a survey conducted by the group and selected students from the University of Iowa?s Recreation and Sports Business Program indicates the 2012 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials injected more than $5.6 million into the Johnson County economy.

USA Wrestling?s two-day event at Carver-Hawkeye Arena determined the U.S. representatives at the 2012 Olympic Games in London in Men?s and Women?s Freestyle and Greco-Roman styles. The championships attracted fans from across the country to the Iowa City area April 20-22. According to a news release, the 179 surveys the average visiting group spent about $700 during their stay, including more than $200 per person.

Below is the news release from the ICCACVB and UI:

Economic Impact of U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials on Johnson County

Exceeded $5.6 Million ? Study indicates that average visitor party spent more than $700

IOWA CITY/CORALVILLE, Iowa ? The economic impact of the recent 2012 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials on Johnson County exceeded $5 million, according to survey results released today by the Iowa City/Coralville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB).

The CVB was assisted in conducting the survey by a team of students selected by Lecturer Dan Matheson at the University of Iowa?s Recreation and Sports Business Program.

The survey-based study was conducted April 20-22, 2012 when the community hosted its first ever U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials. A total of 179 surveys were completed by randomly selected fans assembled in the lobby of three area hotels, at Carver Hawkeye Arena, and during the ASICS Fan Fest in Downtown Iowa City. 171 of the surveys were determined to be completed correctly and included in the study.

The data collected produced the following results:

* -?The projected economic impact of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials on Johnson County was $5.6 million.

* -?Average visitor expenditures per party were $707; per person was $201.00. Average party size was 3.5.

* ? The 2012 Trials attracted 14,214 fans of which 82% (11,655) were from outside of Johnson County.

* ? 3% of respondents, who were here for the Trials, did not actually attend. They reported being here for other event and retail activities.

Nice article from Scott M. Fulton describing Microsoft's iron fisted lock on government desktop productivity systems and the great transition to a Cloud Productivity Platform. ?Keep in mind that in 2005, Massachusetts tried to do the same thing with their SOA effort. ?Then Governor Romney put over $1 M into a beta test that produced the now infamous 300 page report written by Sam Hiser. ?The details of this test resulted in the even more infamous da Vinci ODF plug-in for Microsoft Office desktops. ? The lessons of Massachusetts are simple enough; it's not the formats or office suite applications. ?It's the business process! ?Conversion of documents not only breaks the document. ?It also breaks the embedded "business process". The mystery here is that Microsoft owns the client side of client/server computing. ?Compound documents, loaded with intertwined OLE, ODBC, ActiveX, and other embedded protocols and interface dependencies connecting data sources with work flow, are the fuel of these client/server business productivity systems. ?Break a compound document and you break the business process. ? Even though Massachusetts workers were wonderfully enthusiastic and supportive of an SOA based infrastructure that would include Linux servers and desktops as well as OSS productivity applications, at the end of the day it's all about getting the work done. ?Breaking the business process turned out to be a show stopper. Cloud Computing changes all that. ?The reason is that the Cloud is rapidly replacing client/server as the target architecture for new productivity developments; including data centers and transaction processing systems. ?There are many reasons for the great transition, but IMHO the most important is that the Web combines communications with content, data, and collaborative computing. ? Anyone who ever worked with the Microsoft desktop productivity environment knows that the desktop sucks as a communication device. ?There was no way to integrate communications with desktop office automation systems where the productivity results were worth the effort. ? Cloud computing systems have an incredible productivity advantage here. ?Put aside for the moment the amazing efficiency quotient of Cloud Computing, and stop worrying about bandwidth and connectivity issues. ?Productivity gains with Cloud Computing are going to go through the roof, making investment decisions in newly written business systems very much worth the effort. ? Another lesson from Massachusetts is that the effort to integrate Linux desktops and Open Source office suites into working Windows productivity environments was not worth the cost of having to re write and reinvent existing business processes and systems. ?That too changes with the extraordinary productivity dynamics of Cloud Computing. Funny. ?Here we are again. ?Still wondering if Microsoft's iron grip on business systems can be broken. ?The great transition can't be stopped, but will Microsoft swallow hard, bear down and take the lead? ?Or will they become road kill on the highway towards awesome productivity?

Self Confidence Is A Tale That You Tell Yourself | Self Improvement ...

We all tell ourselves stories continually. That is part of the way that we generate the thoughts and feelings that allow us to do all of the things that we do. For instance you may have got out of bed this morning not feeling one hundred percent. Perhaps you asked yourself, ?am I too sick to go to work?? If your truthful answer was ?marginal?, you may then have made up a story to explain to your team leader that you were too sick to work. For instance: ?when I got up this morning I had this rasping sore throat and I feel highly feverish?.

The more often we use these stories the easier we find it to believe in the truth of the story. In the ?sore throat? example above you might be croaking as you speak to your boss on the telefone to elucidate why it is you are not coming to work today.

Most of the time we create stories to excuse ourselves or to elucidate our unacceptable performance to ourselves and others. But you are able to use stories in a much more positive way. You can write stories about the self-confidence you feel. If you write a good self confidence story and keep telling yourself that story you will, in time, find that you begin to feel self-confident.

The trick to writing a good story is to construct it in three parts, the past, the present and the future. For example, ?I used to suffer from a dearth of self-confidence, but now I feel assured all of the time, I know that now that I have found my self confidence I can always feel assured in the future?.

The other part of the way of becoming self-confident is to learn your story by heart and to keep telling yourself the very same story constantly. Never vary your story and make it your habit to always repeat your story at least four times a day at the same times.

Imagine a precision instrument that records the actions, words and feelings of the best performers. Then download that data to a powerful decoder that analyses and codes the behaviour. Transfer the code to your personal control panel so that you can reproduce excellence and self confidence at will. This is how NLP Techniques work. NLP Practitioner David Ferrers will show you how to build your own control panel during Business Coaching, or at one of his his Sales Success Sales Training workshops.

carbonreduction09 ? Blog Archive ? How to Use Self Improvement ...

Self improvement might seem like one of those hippie dippy things that a serious business person should avoid at all costs. The truth is that these tips are just as helpful to your professional life as they are to your personal life. It?s true-self improvement is not just for feelings. It?s for profits too. So how do you put self improvement to work to help you make money? How can you use them to improve your business? We are going to teach you exactly that in the following paragraphs.

Delegation is a skill you must learn. Stress and anxiety is what you will suffer if you try to handle every little task on your own. Clearly, you want tasks completed as you think is right. However, that?s doesn?t mean that you are the only one who can do the job. Delegating will help complete two objectives. It sends a signal to everyone, including yourself, that you trust your team and the people you work with to help with your projects. This will make you rise in their consideration, especially when you inform them of your appreciation that they took on the job. It will also give you more time to spend working on more essential things. You will be able to meet more of your goals through this approach and that will improve your self-esteem. Both your business and professional life will benefit from all these things.

Positive visualization ? ever hear of it? Basically you take the time to imagine something you are going to do ending up well. When you do this, your business performance can accelerate to higher levels. You want to also experience the emotions that you would feel if this were to go your way. You can project confidence very easily with the event that you are visualizing your mind. This in turn actually helps the situation go the way you want it to. Even though this may seem a little new age, it is certainly a tip that works, and is one of the best business strategies that you can use today.

Try to work on your stubbornness. You may have decided on a particular path to get to your goals. What if the path you?ve decided to follow is no longer effective? Instead of being stubborn and insisting on sticking to the same idea, allow yourself to change techniques and try something new. What?s the worst case scenario? That it won?t be effective? There are plenty of other strategies you can adopt and try out. It takes time to develop flexibility. However, keep in mind that being flexible doesn?t mean being weak or not caring. It merely means that you are prepared to do anything it takes to fulfill your objectives. This will impact your business positively. You shouldn?t just use self improvement in your personal life. It is quite useful to the professional side of your life too. These hints are just the beginning when it comes to using self improvement to expand your business. As you work, you?ll find others.

Ha ha can you believe the shit people say?
