Spanish daily halts edition with fake Chavez photo

MADRID (AP) ? Leading Spanish newspaper El Pais withdrew and reprinted its Thursday edition after discovering its front-page exclusive photograph supposedly showing ailing Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez being treated in Cuba was a fake.

The poor-quality image showed the head of man resembling Chavez apparently on a hospital bed and with tubes in his mouth. The newspaper said it could not independently confirm how, when or where the photograph had been taken.

El Pais said it withdrew the edition and changed its website after it discovered the photograph was not of Chavez. Many copies had already been distributed, however.

The newspaper declined to give numbers on how many newspapers with the photograph had reached the streets. The paper prints some 340,000 copies daily. El Pais said the photograph was on the online edition for 30 minutes before the error was discovered and the edition changed.

El Pais said it had received the picture from an agency. It apologized to its readers for the mistake.

Venezuelan Information Minister Ernesto Villegas denounced the photograph as a fake in a series of messages on Twitter. He said the picture came from a video of another man, and he circulated a link. The video, uploaded to YouTube in 2008, clearly shows another patient.

"Would El Pais publish a similar photo of some European leader? Of its director? Yellow journalism valid if the victim is a South American revolutionary," Villegas said in one of the messages. He accused the paper of systematically violating policies in its own style manual "to attack Venezuela."

Chavez has not been seen in public since undergoing cancer surgery Dec. 11 in Cuba.

How can you have two editor windows in a split screen/column configuration in the Titanium Studio IDE?

Dan, if you have the new Titanium CLI installed you can use Sublime-Text-2 with a build system. I've found this very useful as I don't like switching IDEs. I made 3 build scripts for my Android development, but I'm sure you could adapt them easily.

LINUX

// ~/.config/sublime-text-2/Packages/User/titanium.android.development.sublime-build {     "cmd": ["ti", "build", "--project-dir", "$project_path", "--platform=android", "--target=device", "--no-colors", "--deploy-type=development"] } ? // ~/.config/sublime-text-2/Packages/User/titanium.android.emulator.sublime-build {     "cmd": ["ti", "build", "--project-dir", "$project_path", "--platform=android", "--target=emulator", "--no-colors", "--deploy-type=development"] } ? // ~/.config/sublime-text-2/Packages/User/titanium.android.production.sublime-build {     "cmd": ["ti", "build", "--project-dir", "$project_path", "--platform=android", "--target=device", "--no-colors", "--deploy-type=production"] }
WINDOWS - you might need to modify them so that there's an extra line to denote shell usage, ie:
{     "cmd": [ ... ],     "shell" : true }
These build scripts have been a saviour for me as I'm loathe to change IDE just for one part of my programming life :-)

Town dries up, states scramble to save water

Kevin Murphy / Reuters

A sprinkler is in use near Dodge City, Kans., on Nov. 26.

By Carey Gillam, Reuters

The drought that crippled many communities across the nation last year shows little sign of retreating, and the threat of persistent water scarcity is spurring efforts to preserve every drop.

As the drought of 2012 creeps into 2013, experts say the slow-spreading catastrophe presents near-term problems for a key U.S. agricultural region and potential long-term challenges for millions of Americans.

"Everyone is wondering whether this dry weather is the new norm ... or an anomaly that will soon pass," said Barney Austin, director of hydraulic services for INTERA Inc, an Austin, Texas-based geoscience and engineering consulting firm. "We all hope for the latter, but it's hard to tell."

The signs of distress and the search for answers are most prevalent in the Plains, where historic drought blankets much of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and parts of Texas.

This month the small Oklahoma farming town of Wapanucka lost water completely when the spring-fed wells the community relies on ran dry. Officials closed the town's school and residents had to do without tap water until the town could run a line to a neighboring water district.

In Texas, state lawmakers are pushing for a $2 billion fund to finance water infrastructure projects as numerous communities face their own shortages. But it won't be soon enough to help rice farmers, who were told this month that there is not likely to be enough water to irrigate their fields this spring.

Meanwhile, in the big wheat-growing state of Kansas, penalties for exceeding water use limits for irrigation were doubled this month and Gov. Sam Brownback has launched a task force to come up with strategies to counter statewide shortages.

"It's going to be dry again this year," said Lane Letourneau, water appropriations manager for the Kansas Agriculture Department. "We consider this a really big deal."

Drought conditions plague much of the United States after a summer of scorching temperatures and a lack of rain. The dryness is affecting America's farmland, threatening crops like soybean and corn.

Searching for solutions
Water use is already tightly curtailed in many states. Years of low rainfall and high heat - last year was the hottest on record for the United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - have diminished surface waters even as population and water demand expand.

As well, agricultural and oil and gas interests are pumping the precious commodity from underground aquifers at a pace that often cannot be matched by natural replenishment.

"Water has been viewed as a basic commodity, a basic right," said Les Lampe, a water expert with consultancy Black & Veatch. "You turn on the tap and water comes out and you don't pay very much for it. That has to change."

Farmers are feeling the pain of water shortages most acutely. After multibillion-dollar crop and livestock losses tied to last year's drought, they fear more losses are coming.

Texas rice growers who depend on the lower Colorado River valley for survival are eyeing the fluctuating levels of two key lakes used for irrigation when river levels are too low.

State officials said this month that without enough rain by spring, rice farmers could be completely cut off from irrigation, jeopardizing about 2 percent of the U.S. crop and about $1 billion for the Texas economy.

"We've got a shortage of water," said Ronald Gertson, a rice grower and chairman of the Colorado Water Issues Committee. "People are going to be both hungry and thirsty before they wake up to this problem."

Forecasts show drier-than-normal weather likely prevailing in the Plains and western Midwest for the next few months at least. But even normal rainfall levels would not be enough to fully recharge resources.

Three to five times more rain than normal is needed in key corn-growing areas that include Nebraska and Kansas, for instance, to ease soil dryness after last summer's drought, according to Don Keeney, an agricultural meteorologist with Cropcast weather service.

Roughly 60.26 percent of the contiguous United States was in at least moderate drought as of January 8, according to a "Drought Monitor" report issued by a group of federal and state climatology experts. Severe drought still blanketed 86.20 percent of the High Plains.

"This drought certainly has gotten people's attention," said Joe Straus, speaker of the Texas House of Representatives. "Regardless of whether it starts raining now or not, long-term water planning is essential. We need to be responsible."

For some, it's already an emergency. Persistent dry conditions in north-central Oklahoma led officials in Payne County to declare a state of emergency this month as the reservoir providing water to nearly 16,000 residents in seven counties fell to record low levels.

The approximately 500 residents of Wapanucka are talking of higher rates to fund a permanent pipeline to a new water source. But running out of water has shown how harsh doing without water can be, said Julie Wallis, Wapanucka's city water clerk.

"We are not going to be the only ones who this happens to," said Wallis. "It's coming."

Spanish pets to be blessed at Saint Anthony feast | The Raw Story

By Agence France-Presse

?

Dogs, cats, parrots and other pets, some dressed in their finest winter coats, entered churches across Spain on Thursday to be blessed on the feast day of Saint Anthony, the patron saint of animals.

Animal lovers lined up outside the main entrance to the Church of San Anton in central Madrid with their pets on leashes or wrapped in blankets in their arms as they waited for a priest to sprinkle the animals with holy water.

Many dressed their dogs in their finest for the occasion, decking them in coats to guard against the cold or tying bows in their fur.

Jose Martinez, 74, decked out his blonde cocker spaniel called Poki in a scarf in the yellow and red colours of the Spanish flag and a grey sweater.

?We brought him here to be blessed to see if he becomes less naughty,? he said as he stood a queue while his pet barked at other dogs waiting nearby.

Lucia Perez tried in vain to get her grey and white parrot which was wrapped in a green blanket to say hello as she waited for her pet to be blessed.

?I come almost every year. We are very pleased with her and want her to have a long life,? the 57-year-old said before kissing the bird?s beak.

Nearby the line of faithful waiting to present their pets to be blessed, another queue formed outside a separate church door to buy buns.

The buns are traditionally kept alongside a coin in a cupboard to be eaten on the feast of Saint Anthony the following year to ensure good health and to guarantee the blessing of the saint.

They are baked according to a secret recipe meant to keep them soft for longer.

Pets and their owners, police dogs and guide dogs for the blind march through the streets around the church in the afternoon.

The festival has been celebrated in Madrid largely uninterrupted since the 19th century. It is also held in other parts of Spain such as the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean and the northern city of Burgos.

Animals are said to have been instinctively drawn to Saint Anthony throughout his life. Anthony, who was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1195, is often depicted addressing a menagerie of animals attentively listening to his words.

Factbox: Obama's proposals to curb gun violence

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama announced a series of gun-control measures on Wednesday - including proposals for enhanced background checks and a ban on military-style assault weapons - that are aimed at reducing gun violence after the shooting of 20 children and six adults at a school in Connecticut last month.

Here are the main proposals, broken down into action that Obama wants Congress to take and moves that the White House can accomplish without congressional approval, through executive orders.

PROPOSALS REQUIRING APPROVAL BY CONGRESS

- Require criminal background checks on prospective buyers in all gun sales. A White House summary of Obama's plan calls this "the single most important thing we can do to prevent gun violence and mass shootings." Federally licensed firearms dealers now are required to run background checks on gun buyers, but studies estimate that nearly 40 percent of all sales are made by private sellers who are exempt from the requirement.

- Renew and strengthen the federal ban on sales of military-style assault weapons that was in effect 1994-2004. A 2010 survey by the Police Executive Research Forum found that more than one-third of police departments reported an increase in criminals' use of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines since the prohibition ended. Bringing back the ban would be difficult because of opposition from Republicans and some Democrats in Congress.

- Reinstate a ban on magazines holding more than 10 rounds. Like expanded background checks, this is likely to have more support in Congress than an assault weapons ban.

- Ban the possession of armor-piercing ammunition and its transfer to anyone other than the military and law enforcement.

- Increase punishments for gun trafficking, particularly by unlicensed dealers or "straw buyers" who purchase arms for criminals.

- Provide $30 million in one-time grants to states to help school districts develop and implement emergency management plans.

- Approve the White House's $4 billion proposal to help keep 15,000 police officers on the streets.

- Confirm a director for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The ATF has not had a director for six years. The National Rifle Association, the nation's largest gun-rights group, has pushed to weaken the ATF's authority to enforce gun laws and prevent the agency from having strong leadership.

- Give $150 million to school districts and law enforcement agencies to hire school resource officers, school psychologists, social workers, and counselors. This would put up to 1,000 new school resource officers - specially trained police officers who work in schools - and school counselors on the job.

- Reach 750,000 young people through programs to identify mental illness early and refer them to treatment. A new initiative, Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resilience in Education) would provide training for teachers and other adults who regularly interact with students to recognize young people who need help and ensure they are referred to mental health services.

ACTION TO BE TAKEN BY OBAMA

- Make it easier for states to make information - notably about those with mental health issues - available to the background check system.

- Direct the Centers for Disease Control and scientific agencies to conduct research into the causes and prevention of gun violence.

- Direct U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

- Launch a national responsible gun ownership campaign.

- Require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

- Nominate a director for the ATF.

- Ensure that every school has a comprehensive emergency management plan. A 2010 survey found that although 84 percent of public schools had a written response plan in the event of a shooting, only 52 percent had drilled their students on the plan during the previous year.

- Finalize requirements for private health insurance plans to cover mental health services under the healthcare overhaul of 2010.

Testing Cardiovascular Fitness in Our Youth | The Sport Digest

Cardiovascular fitness is generally considered to be the most important component of health-related physical fitness. Other commonly used terms for cardiovascular fitness include cardiorespiratory endurance, aerobic fitness, and aerobic capacity. The national youth physical fitness test (FITNESSGRAM), developed at the Cooper Institute in Dallas, is now offered as a cooperative program with the President?s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition (PCFSN) and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD). The recommended test for youth in the FITNESSGRAM battery is called the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER).

The PACER involves running ?laps? across a distance of 20 meters. Laps must be completed in a designated time to be counted. The speed of running the laps gradually increases. A ?beep? from a recording provides a signal to students as to when a lap must be completed. Two beeps signals that an increase in running speed is necessary for laps that follow. A student?s score is the number of laps completed while still keeping the ?pace.?

PACER test scores correlate well to the best test of cardiovascular fitness, maximum oxygen uptake. Maximum oxygen uptake refers to the maximum amount of oxygen that a person can use in vigorous exercise. It is a lab test that requires very expensive equipment. There is a high relationship between cardiovascular fitness as measured by maximum oxygen uptake and incidence of chronic diseases (e.g., heart disease, diabetes, certain forms of cancer, Alzheimer?s) and early death from these chronic diseases. A recent report of the Institute of Medicine indicates that youth with low PACER scores have a higher incidence of health risk markers (e.g., elevated blood pressure, elevated blood sugar levels, elevated blood fat levels) than those with scores in the ?healthy fitness zone.?

Students who take the entire FITNESSGRAM test battery typically receive a fitness report card that informs parents whether their child is in the ?healthy fitness zone,? or is in need of improvement in cardiovascular fitness. Youth are compared to a health standard rather than percentiles or norms that are common for some types of academic testing. Messages are provided to help parents and students make plans for improving their cardiovascular fitness. Those who are interested can find more information about ?healthy fitness zone? standards in the Reference Guide at http://www.cooperinstitute.org/reference-guide.

FITNESSGRAM also reports results for four other components of health related physical fitness: body composition (body mass index), flexibility (sit and reach), strength, and muscular endurance (curl-up, push-up, trunk lift).

Studies show that fitness reports to parents can be an important tool for increasing fitness and physical activity and decreasing overweight and obesity among youth. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends regular tracking of activity patterns of youth (and their parents), and also recommends regular assessment of body composition. Regularly monitoring the fitness and activity patterns of youth as a health prevention measure has growing support from the scientific community.

So if your child is not tested in school using FITNESSGRAM it may be time to ask, ?why not?? If your child is tested, and you received a FITNESSGRAM report card for your child, take a closer look. Check the messages on the report and discuss them with your child. If improvement is needed, talk to your child?s physical education teacher or your physician about steps that can be taken. Reaching the ?healthy fitness zone? is achievable by virtually all students with adequate exercise, but because of factors such as heredity, maturation rate, age, and health status, achieving the zone will be more difficult for some than others. Parental support and encouragement as well as parental role modeling are important.

The research is clear. Low cardiovascular fitness in youth is associated with various health risk markers in youth and risk of chronic disease among adults. Appropriate assessment of youth can track youth fitness over time and make youth, their parents, and health professionals aware of student fitness and associated health status. The PACER is one ?field? test commonly used in schools that can provide fitness and health information for youth and their parents and provide a basis for improvement.

Ahwatukee Foothills resident Dr. Charles ?Chuck? Corbin is professor emeritus at Arizona State University. He is the author of more than 90 books on fitness and exercise. He was the first chair of the President?s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition Science Board and served on the Institute of Medicine Committee on Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth. He was a charter member of the advisory board for FITNESSGRAM.? This article appears in the latest daily newsletter of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. I visited Sephora India!!

I visited Sephora India!!

If you are with me on Facebook page, the you know that I recently visited Sephora India and I was very excited about it. Frankly speaking when I entered the store, I forgot everything like what to concentrate on and what to buy... what I needed and what I wanted. I was just having a feel of Sephora store because trust me I always wished we had Sephora store in India when US vloggers/bloggers talked about it. It felt like mecca of makeup-holics.
A few things to note before I show you what I bought-

  1. Sephora store is big but I want it to be bigger. Yeah... greedy!!
  2. Sephora India has these brands available -

Benefit
Burts and Bees
Crabtree and Evelyn
Dior
Guerlain
L'Occitane (I think I saw soemthing!)
NYX
Oscar Blandi
Soap and Glory (yay!!)
Stila
Sephora
Shiseido
The Face Shop
A wide range of fragrances to choose from (Men and Women)

I was expecting to see -

Urban Decay for their primer

NARS for their blushes

Bobbi Brown for obvious reasons

Fresh for their amazing skin care products

Julep for their amazing nail paints

Obesessive Compulsive Cosmetics for their lip tars

If I was too sepho(ra)-struck at that time and missed any of these then please enlighten me.

3. SAs were nice to me and they happily gave me a few testers (I am so unlucky that I lost them somewhere because they gave me a bag as big as banquet hall for just a couple of items I bought). I was most excited about Benefit Pore-fessional Primer and I almost bought it but SA offered me a tester first and I accepted. Boo!!

4. NYX items were off the shelf and so was Stila. Sephora nail stickers were tempting but I was not ready to pay Rs.650 for those stickers

?5. Like every one else I felt that prices were a little too high if we compare the price list of US. This always happens with us. But you know what we have options of buying them online too so never mind. Though I wish Sephora was a little nice to us.

6. My next Sephora shopping list is ready.

I think this is what I wanted to say about my experience. Let's see what I bought-
